Note: The scripture has a link that will take you to an online, King James bible
if you would like to read the whole chapter.
Scripture: Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
Observation: The rich man to whom Jesus is speaking wants to know what good thing he needs to do to get to heaven. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments, and he responds that he has, and wonders what is lacking... but he doesn't like the answer that he gets. Jesus tells him to forsake everything that is dear to him... in this case, his money and possessions, and to follow the Saviour.
Application: The requirement here was to let go of the worldly ties and give your life whole-heartedly to Jesus. It isn't about money or possessions... it is about those things that matter most to us. Each day in life, we face a choice... between this world and the things that belong here, and between Jesus Christ. When you know the Lord as your own personal Saviour, and when you spend time following Him, the choice becomes easy. He is our all-sufficiency.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I will never forget the first time Jesus called to me and told me to follow Him, and I am grateful for the patience and encouragement He extends to me daily. Thank You Lord, for all You have done in my life. Thank You for your provision, Your grace, and the lessons You have taught me. Dear Lord, please use my life to point others to Your cross and to the open arms waiting there. I know how You have changed my life, and I pray Lord, that those that I come into contact with would have the same blessing in their lives. Thank You Lord, for Your love. In Jesus name, Amen.
