Observation: It all depends on your idea of what is good. It is good to have what you want? Or is it good to have that which is needful? As a parent, there are many times when I give my children things that I believe are necessary for them, and they would tell you that it is not good... in like manner, many of the things God gives us, He does so because He knows they are good... in spite of how we may feel about the situation. The last part of this verse mentions asking... when you come to God in prayer, you are to be yeilded to His will rather than your own. When you truly want His will in your life, you cease asking for specific gifts, but rather, that which will be best according to Him, and not yourself.
Application: Ouch! I had one of those days yesterday when it seemed like everything that was going on was bad... Praise the Lord, He does give good gifts - gifts that may seem like trials at first, but that lead to greater blessings that ever imagined. It is a gift in itself to know that I serve a God I can trust with everything. He really does love me, He really does want that which is best in my life... and He really does KNOW what I need. And when I am going through a trial, it really is a good gift according to my needs... even when it goes against my wants.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I just want to take a minute to say thank You. You have blessed me with so much more than I could ever deserve. Even through my trials and troubles, You have always done that which is good for me, and I thank you that You allow me to look back and see the good that comes from them. Lord, today I pray for others who may be in the midst of trials of their own. I pray that they would turn to You and seek comfort, trusting that You love them and are doing those things that they need most in their lives. I pray Lord, that You would draw them close to Your loving heart and that they too would be able to look back and see the good gift that You have given them through the hard times. Lord, please help me to always trust in You... even when I don't understand. In Jesus name, Amen.
